Blasphemy--the denial or denigration of God--has a long history. Jesus was tried for blasphemy. Early Christians felt that the Jews in taking such action were themselves guilty of it. But it is not a story confined to the remote past. The publication in 2005 of 12 cartoons in a Danish newspaper linking the prophet Mohammed to terrorism sparked outrage in the global Islamic community. And that was not an instance of blasphemy intruding itself upon a Western society unused to such issues within Christianity. In many societies blasphemy remained an offence in law and the prosecution of artistic productions profaning the sacred was still a possibility. 
David Nash's new study focuses on the development of blasphemy in the Christian world. Tracing the subject from the Middle Ages to the present, he outlines the history of blasphemy as a concept, from a species of heresy to modern understandings of it as a crime against the sacred and individual religious identity. Investigating its appearance in speech, literature, popular publishing and the cinema, he disinters the likely motives and agendas of blasphemers themselves, as well as offering a glimpse of blasphemy's victims. In particular, he seeks to understand why this seemingly medieval offence has reappeared to become a distinctly modern presence in the West.

La blasfemia- l’atto di negare o denigrare Dio- ha una lunga storia. Gesù stesso fu processato per blasfemia. I primi cristiani sostenevano che gli ebrei, intraprendendo tale azione, furono essi stessi colpevoli di ciò. Tuttavia, non è una storia relegata al lontano passato. L'uscita, nel 2005, di 12 vignette su un giornale danese che associavano il profeta Maometto al terrorismo, ha suscitato indignazione nella comunità islamica internazionale. E non è stato un atto di blasfemia che invadeva una società occidentale, non abituata a simili questioni interne al cristianesimo. In molte società la blasfemia è rimasta un reato, e l'azione giudiziaria contro produzioni artistiche profananti il sacro, era ancora una possibilità. Il nuovo studio di David Nash si concentra sullo sviluppo della blasfemia nel mondo cristiano. Indagando questo tema dal Medioevo fino al mondo odierno, fa emergere la storia della blasfemia come un concetto, da un certo tipo di eresia fino alle teorie moderne che la vedono come un crimine contro l’ identità religiosa sacra ed individuale. Approfondendo la sua presenza nel linguaggio, nella letteratura, nelle pubblicazioni popolari e nel cinema, egli fa emergere i motivi ed i fini dei bestemmiatori stessi, oltre a rivolgere uno sguardo alle vittime della blasfemia. In particolar modo, cerca di capire perché questo reato apparentemente medievale sia riapparso, diventando una presenza distintamente moderna in Occidente.
